Many years later, when Pheej is an old man, he will return to Laos from Michigan. He’ll wear a watch on his left hand, a hat atop his head, and feel his round stomach pushing against the leather of his belt beneath the sweltering heat of the sun. Outside a bustling airport, on a street with clouds of yellow dust, the scent of diesel coming in waves, he’ll stand waiting. The first person who runs to him will be Zeb. Zeb, too, has become an old man. He’ll wear a button-up shirt that has been washed many times over; his frail body, leathery skin and bones, is lost in the fabric that hangs on him. Zeb will not look Pheej in the face, but instead count his toes and fingers. Zeb will say to Pheej, again and again, “It was these toes that led Tuam and me toward brotherhood after our fathers died. It was these hands that held fast to ours and showed us the way to each other when we were lost as boys by ourselves. Although our bodies have parted in this life, my heart has never wandered from your side.”
